“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”

Greetings. My name is Incé Husain (she/her), and I am a neuroscience PhD student at Western University who does some freelance reporting work in London, Ontario, and Fredericton, New Brunswick. I love to write, and believe firmly in the ability of the press to question problematic norms, shape social ideologies, and ultimately nurture a more cerebral and artistic society.

The Unprecedented Times is a portfolio of articles I have written for The NB Media Co-op, The Antler River Media Co-op, The Aquinian, The Brunswickan, and The Atlantic Student Research Journal. It also features novel local stories I pursue on my own. As of July 2024, I have also started posting sporadic journal entries (see my short essay ‘Beyond journalism’).

In September 2024, I was awarded the Brian Beaton Prize in Journalism for Justice for my article “Under the rubble of our dreams”: Vigil honours university students killed by Israeli forces, as Western University graduation ceremonies unfold. I dedicate this award to the many Palestinians I met - and their unwavering allies - who wield their voices with conviction, power, and humanity for a just world.

For those interested in keeping up to date with my writing, I invite you to subscribe (it’s free)!

Have a story, or want to spar with me about anything? Let’s make an article out of it. You’re welcome to reach out to me at ince33@gmail.com.

Read my articles here. Read my journal entries here.

I would like to acknowledge that I live and write on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak and Attawandaron.

All my articles that have appeared in newspapers reference the newspaper name beneath the article title. The term ‘Published in’ is used for articles I have pursued independently and then offered to newspapers. The term ‘Written for’ is used for articles I have pursued that were pitched by newspaper editors. At the end of each article that has been published in a newspaper, I state the date it appeared in the newspaper along with the associated online link.
